Azkend 2: The World Beneath takes you on an exciting journey to the center of the Earth through increasingly challenging, but never boring, Match 3 levels. In a world full of Match 3 games, Azkend 2 stands out brilliantly among the rest. Azkend 2: The World Beneath is the second game in the Azkend game series. I have not played the first Azkend game, but after playing this one, I intend to as soon as possible. It was that entertaining. If you haven’t played the first one either, don’t worry, you can still enjoy this sequel, as it’s not a continuation as far as the story is concerned. The graphics are extremely realistic, depicting hand-drawn art work that I thought was just lovely, and the storyline is a combination of the possible and impossible, which just tickled the imagination. The action begins on a sailing ship named Celestia, which is traveling from Liverpool to New York in the year 1896. The Celestia runs into an extremely rough storm, which it cannot get around, and is eventually thrust into a raging whirlpool. When you awake, you find yourself in a cavern deep beneath the sea, and the journey to escape begins. Unlike most Match 3 games that I’ve encountered, with Azkend 2, you drag your cursor across the items to make groups of 3 or more, instead of swapping them, which was an entertaining change. While you are “matching” items, lightning strikes, and you’ll see a fragmented piece of equipment has been placed on your board. You must then move that piece to the bottom of the board to release that part of the item. The objective is to continue clearing boards and colleting these fragments until you have all the pieces and can complete the item. One thing I really enjoyed was that the story plays out throughout the game, instead of just in the beginning. In between the levels, there are cutscenes that contain some really lovely graphics and realistic voice acting that helps keep you immersed in the story. As with all Match 3 games, certain items give you more different options for clearing the board. You need to get rid of ice patches, fog patches, stop fires, change tiles to another color, and fill up tesla coils so that their lightning bolts can help you clear the board. Overall, Azkend 2: The World Beneath was a refreshing Match 3 game that really stood out among the rest. If you’re a fan of this genre, then be sure to give this one a try.
