General Overview and Tips

If your first rough day in The Alters felt like spinning plates in a wind tunnel, you met the real game. One Alter needs rest, another is already in a mood about the day, your next trip outside can chew through the clock, and a supply crunch shows up right when the base finally starts to feel stable. That is the loop. The Alters is not asking you to do everything. It is asking you to pick what matters today and let the rest wait.

Once that clicks, the game gets much better. An Alter is an alternate-life version of Jan with a different skill set and personality, so your base is not just a workshop on wheels. It is a moving argument with excellent utility. The fun is building a crew out of Jan's other lives, then using the right mix of skills and personalities to keep the base rolling, survive the planet, and make story progress without wrecking the crew's mood.

What the run actually asks from you

  1. Cover tomorrow before you decorate today. Keep food, radiation filters that help shield the base, and the material for your next required build or research in decent shape before you spend on comfort.
  2. Treat research as time saved, not just new toys. Early upgrades that cut repeat chores or smooth production usually beat comfort picks unless your crew's mood is already slipping.
  3. Use Alters by specialty, then protect the human part. A great assignment stops being great fast if that Alter is exhausted, upset, or handling every emergency job.
  4. Move the base with intent. Before you roll to the next area, finish key crafting, top off essentials, and check that the trip will not leave you short the moment you arrive.

Tip: If a run starts to wobble, take one full recovery cycle and make it boring on purpose. Cancel optional errands, reassign everyone to essentials, let your most strained Alter rest, and only push the main objective after food, filters, and work coverage look normal again. In The Alters, one calm day fixes more bad spirals than one heroic sprint.

The clean habit is simple: start each day by checking the next mandatory objective, then set jobs in this order: survival basics, base upkeep, research unlocks, story push. Do that, and the game's tense bursts feel fair instead of random. You will still make hard calls, and some Alters will absolutely have opinions about them, but that is where The Alters earns its name.
