Virtual Villagers 3 The Secret City Cheats and Walkthough

[courtesy of Lara, LDW Forums, and VirtualVillagers3.net]

Thanks LDW for making another awesome game!!

ATTENTION: Check here first ~before~ posting on the forums!! I will try to monitor the forums as much as I can but you'll probably be able to find all your answers here first! - Lara

Overview: Please note - Because of the random nature of this game, things may turn out slightly different for you. This guide was written using my own experiences while playing with my tribe, "WannaHawkaLugi" and borrowing from the game maker's forums.

The legend of Isola and its lost tribe continues in this third instalment!
  • If this is your first foray into the world of Virtual Villagers, may I humbly suggest that you put this one on hold and go back and play the first two? Sure, you don't need to, but the first two games are rewarding and fun! Plus, you'll see how the legend of Isola unfolds.
  • Even if you have played the VV games before, its always wise to run the tutorial at the start. It helps you get a feel for the new map and walks you through some of the first puzzles to get you on your way.
  • Note: I played using the tutorial but I did NOT let my villagers have a child (per tutorial instructions) until I had established my village a little more than the tutorial advised. This left the "Replay Tutorial" at the top of the screen for a while but I feel it was worth that inconvenience. Once I had my villagers make their first child the tutorial ended.
  • You may want to pause the game overnight (instead of leaving it running on "Slow" near the beginning. I left it running the first night and all my villagers starved! Once your village is built up a little, you can leave it running overnight on "slow" if you like.
  • One aspect that I noticed had changed is that women can no longer have children past the age of 50. However, you can still make them "go indoors." This is a great way to build up parenting skills quickly (especially if you want to create an "Esteemed Elder" or have a villager master all five skills).
  • An "Awards" section has been added to celebrate certain milestones in the game. To view it, go to the "Puzzles" tab and click "Awards" at the bottom of the screen or scroll down for the full list.
  • At the very beginning of the game, you will find a piece of fruit (mine was a Banana) near a broken machine. Put a villager on it right away and he/she will plant it. This gets your "orchard" started and will help your villagers harvest more food so they wont starve.
  • HINT: Make sure you train at least three builders right away. You need 3 adept builders for one of the earlier puzzles so train 'em early to avoid having to wait like I did.
  • A nice change in this game is that if you accidentally interrupt a villager doing an important task (IE: Retrieving a key) the action wont be lost like it was in previous versions. All you have to do is set that villager back onto the task.
  • There are more collectable for the children to find in this game - Feathers (found all over), Shells/Coral (found near the water), Tortise shells (Found near the "Marriage Hut"), and Tablet Pieces (Found near the rubble). Note: The Table pieces only beging to appear once you've started clearing the rubble.

Factions

A new twist has been added to the Tech screen. At the beginning of the game, you can now choose either the "Nature" or "Magic" Faction. This gives you different advantages depending on which one you choose; however, once you choose a faction, you can't change it for the rest of the game. When I played, I chose the "Magic" Faction.
Magic Faction

Level One - Increases your Scientists' productivity
Level Two - Introduces a "Magic Herb" - In this case, they are magic berries, located right where the children go when "Nature calls."
Level Three - Increases your village's Max Population.

Nature Faction

Level One - Replenishes food supplies more quickly
Level Two - Introduces a special "Natural Herb" - In this case it is a "Pitcher Plant" located right where the children go when "Nature calls."
Level Three - Increases your Villager's longevity

Awards

Abundant Security - Awarded when you stockpile 20,000 food
Ancient Elder - Awarded when a villager reaches age 90
Alchemy R Us - Awarded after creating 50 unique alchemy recipes
Child Prodigy - Awarded when a villager reaches "Master" level before age 18
Jack of All Trades - Awarded when a villager masters all 5 skills
Fungus Among Us - Awarded when 100 mmushrooms have been harvested
Legendary Leader - Awarded when a Chief rules for 50 years
Prolific Procreation - Awarded when a villager gives birth to Triplets
Tech Wonders - Awarded when you accumulate 1,000,000 Tech Points
The Doctor is IN - Awarded after curing 30 villagers

Island Events

Please Note: This was taken from the LDW forums and is not complete. Furthermore, your outcomes may vary slightly (as some of mine did) I honestly can't confirm many of these (except the ones I noted) but it is still a fairly accurate representation and can help you if you're not sure which to choose.

Grab the fish - gain 500 food (I gained 1,000 food - Lara) Move to high ground-tribe dry but disappointed

The Ants and the Granary

The Omen in the Clouds
Tarita has noticed a very strange formation in the clouds. She is convinced that this is an omen of ill fortune. She must decide if she should try to warn the villages about this ominous sign in the sky. What will the other villagers think of her if she is wrong? Perhaps she should perform her trusty ‘dance of happy good luck." Then again what if the dance doesn't work? Warn the villagers - lose 800 tech points Perform the dance - ???

The Ancient Tablet
One morning, Tasiri was combing the beach for useful items, when she uncovered a square tablet of exceptionally smooth, hard stone. Engraved in the tablet's surface are a multitude of intricate glyphs and strange markings. She takes it back to the others to try to determine what to do with it. Use it for doing laundry - very clean clothes Use it for decoration - likes learning

The Daredevil
Raraku is teasing a group of sharks hovering near the beach. As a crowd of village women gathers to thrill at his daring, he gets the idea that he should show off further by swimming with the sharks and trying to ride one by grabbing onto its fin. He swims with sharks - parenting skills He rethinks his 'plan' - he lives.

The Hole in the Hut
Naioti has been feeling a chilly draft in the hut lately. Fed up with freezing at night, she searches for leaks, finally finding the pesky hole that is letting all that cold air in. Now that she has found the hole, she just has to find a way to fix it. Use beeswax - food loss Use tree sap - damaged tree

The Mysterious Crate
One fine morning Tekoi finds a large wooden crate washed up on the beach. It seems to be in good repair, so he imagines that whatever is inside is probably still good. He wonders whether he should try to get it open. Open the crate - gains food, sickens villager (Others have reported finding more villagers inside! - Lara) Shove it back out to sea-no change

The Royal Jelly
One morning Spok notices that the bees, aside from creating honey, create another yellowish substance that looks more like jelly. The bees seem very fond of it, especially the queen bee. Spok wonders if he should try it on his morning banana sandwich. The only problem is how to bring it home. There are lots of vials in the lab, and Spok isn't sure which kind to use. Use a clear vial - sunlight ruins jelly Use a dark vial - feels better

The Medical Emergency
Saka has been having very bad abdominal pains all morning. By afternoon, she is overcome by pain and high fever. The villagers have been able to partially translate an ancient scroll, left by Isola's original inhabitants, that describes this illness exactly. The medical procedure is extremely dangerous and is barely within the villager's technical reach. Attempt the procedure - healing skills Let the illness take its course - lives with pain

The Ghostly Dream
One night as Swahili is just falling asleep, she starts hearing the gentle, whispering voice of a beautiful lady clad in white gossamer. She whispers, "When the heart and the mind are one, the spirit and the body are in balance. Seek your inner harmony, my child!" What a strange dream! What can this mean? Study the ways of nature - (??) Study the healing arts - gains healing skill

Go figure. - Lara)

At some point he feels compelled to interact with them somehow. Poke the ant hill with a stick - gain research skills Drop some bits of food - lose 200 food

Herbs and Alchemy Recipies

Please Note: This section was taken from VirtualVillagers3.net I can't confirm the accuracy of all these potions but I did notice that they did not work the same for me until I built up my Alchemy Skills to Level 3. Before that, many of them blew up in my face!

The Herbs
-- The Cactus - located just above the Science area.
-- The Black Orchid - on the edge of the grassy area below the orchard
-- The Rose - located on the right edge of the orchard, kind of below the pink gem
-- The Lotus - to the left of the stairs near the bath
-- The Tiger Lily - partway up the path to the door (orange flower on right)
-- The Berry (Magic) or Pitcher Plant (Nature) is located to the left of the alchemy lab, where the kids go when nature calls. These plants only appear when you have purchased Level 2 in your faction.

Recipes

Note: If a potion has a puff of green smoke coming from the pot, it's typically bad.

The Puzzles

IMHO, Solving the Puzzles is what this game is all about so PLEASE, consider this section as a last resort for when you are REALLY stuck! Why ruin all the fun, right? =) Highlight the text to see the answer.

Puzzle 1 - The First Chief
Drop all your villagers on the robes in the amphitheater: any villager except nursing moms can become chief. If you can't find your chief right away, wait until the moms no longer have babies and drop them on the robe. (You will need to repeat this process each time the chief dies.)

Puzzle 2 - The Bee Hive
First, light the fire (collect wood and dry grass in the firepit, then light the fire). Then drop an adult villager on the burned out torches below the hive. He/she will return the torch to the hive and calm the bees so you can collect honey.

Puzzle 3 - The Alchemy Lab
You will need an Adept Scientist (or more than one). Scattered around the village (random locations) are 2 colored pots (red or yellow with white stripes), a brown pot, a gray bowl with spoons, and a short spear (orange-brown handle with gray blade). Drop your scientist(s) on each item and they will return it to the lab - if they drop the item before reaching the lab, it will warp back to where you found it originally. Returning all five items solves the puzzle. NOTE: I had a hard time finding the spear. It's in the bottom right area of the map near some foliage (it kinda blends into the scenery a little). I had a hard time finding it b/c I had dropped villagers ~near~ it before but never directly ~on~ it so no one ever picked it up and I assumed it was just part of the background! - Lara)

Puzzle 4 - The Roster of the Dead
At the far right of the map (use keyboard shortcut '3' to get there) is a grassy area - at the upper right of this area is a big leafy bush. Have your villagers remove these leaves, which uncovers the roster of the dead (they will gain building skill; trained builders can accomplish this faster). NOTE: This is perfect for training builders for another puzzle so put at least 3 villagers on this task! - Lara

Puzzle 5 - Weather Dancing
You will need Level 2 Leadership, a tribal chief, and 3 Adept Farmers. First, drop the chief on your lit fire. He/she will begin weather dancing. Then drop the farmers on the fire, and they will join in. You will know they are successful when sparkles appear over their heads and under their feet.

Puzzle 6 - The Lift
You will need 3 Adept Builders and Level 2 Restoration. Once you have purchased the tech, drop your 3 builders on the "strange machine" in the orchard. Make sure their action line reads "repairing the lift". If you have done this correctly, the lift will be repaired quickly. TO USE THE LIFT: See Puzzle 10 - "The Orchard" - Lara

Puzzle 7 - The Rubble
You will need Level 2 Restoration. Drop a villager (preferably a builder) on the pile of rocks at the bottom of the map. He/she will clear away the rocks, gaining building skill (more builders will accomplish this task faster). NOTE: When you are about 2% in to clearing the rubble, tablet pieces will start to appear for the children to collect. You may want to watch this process carefully if you want all the tablet pieces. I collected 7 pieces but then, my villagers cleared the rubble over night and I hardly ever see tablet pieces there any more. - Lara

Puzzle 8 - The Ancient Bath
You will need to have completed Puzzle 3 and have a Master Builder. Drop your builder on the "chalkboard" in the alchemy lab (he/she will "see" it if you fly them over the lab) - he/she will create the the plans for the bath. Drop your builders on the bath to complete the project. NOTE: The Chalkboard will not clear until the project is complete.- Lara

Puzzle 9 - The Statue
You will need Level 3 Restoration, Level 3 Leadership, a tribal chief, a Master Builder, and a completed bath (solved Puzzle 8). Drop the Master Builder on the chalkboard (which will be blank after the bath is completed), and he/she will draw up plans for the statue. Drag an adult villager (not a nursing mom) up the path to the door until he/she "Sees a good place to anchor the statue" -- this villager is more likely to be successful if he/she has some building skill. That villager will then build scaffolding to help anchor the statue. Your chief must direct work on the statue, so drop him/her on the statue to begin this process - if the chief stops directing work, then progress will halt until you return the chief to his/her duties. Once the chief is directing, you can then drop builders on the statue to help "pushing the statue". The villagers must push the statue up the path towards the door - this will take several hours (you can click on the statue to bring up a timer in the status bar that will help you determine how long is left - but this time depends on how many builders you have working on the project and may increase if builders leave the project). Your builders may occasionally complain that "there is no more room to help out" - only a limited number of builders can work on the statue at any given time.

Puzzle 10 - The Orchard
You should plant your first seed as soon as the game starts: this first seed is located next to the ruined lift: drop one of your adult villagers on this seed and he/she will plant it. To gather the next two seeds, you will need to have completed Puzzle 6 (The Lift). As soon as a rain storm starts, place an adult villager (but not a nursing mom or child) on the lift (his/her action line should read "Standing on the Lift") Leave the villager there until the lift reaches its highest point, when a seed will fall from the tree above. Drop the villager on the seed to plant it. You will need to plant a total of 3 seeds (the original plus two from the lift) to complete the orchard - the puzzle will be completed once all three trees have become mature (and start producing fruit - it takes about 8 hours on 'normal' speed for the tree to mature). Additional seeds (beyond the first three) will not be planted, but will instead be placed in the food bin. (Note: If you have trouble getting to the lift before it starts to go up, you may wish to pause the game with the spacebar when you see the rain start before finding a villager. You will need to unpause the game to see their status line to make sure they are properly placed.)

Puzzle 11 - Banishing the Sharks
You will need to have completed Puzzle 3 and have at least Level 2 in your chosen faction, Nature or Magic. For NATURE: collect the following herbs for a potion: 2 X Black Orchid, 1 x Pitcher Plant. For MAGIC: collect the following herbs for a potion: 2 X Rose, 1 x Berry. Have an adult villager (not a nursing mother) drink the potion. He/she will take a vial to the ocean. How the sharks are actually dealt with depends on the faction chosen (the nature potion is a shark repellant, the magic potion "charms" the sharks so they won't bother the villagers).

Puzzle 12 - Aromatherapy
You will need to have completed Puzzle 8, have Level 3 Medicine, and a Master Doctor. Drop your Master Doctor in the completed bath. He/she will fill the bowls around the bath with Lotus plants ("doing aromatherapy"). Then drop a Master Doctor on the fire to light the burners and finish the puzzle.

Puzzle 13 - The Ash Key
Later in the game (after at least one fire cycle - 10 hours on fast speed), you will notice sparkles around the fire. Let your fire go out (do not replenish it with firewood) - a diamond will appear in the ashes. The diamond will be too hot to pick up initially (it was in a fire, don't forget). To cool the key, drop adult villagers on the rightmost of the two waterfalls (where they go to drink and do laundry). They will gather water and drop it on the key. They will need to do this several times (8-10, at least) to make the diamond cool enough to touch - your villagers won't repeat this task on their own, so you will have to make them do it by dropping them on the waterfall. When the villagers no longer bring water to the fire (they'll revert to drinking from the waterfall when you drop them on it), drop a villager on the key - they will take it to the door and solve the puzzle. You will need to repeat this step if they drop the key before reaching the door. NOTE: I had to let my fire burn through TWO cycles before the "sparkles" started appearing in the flames. I also noticed that children can pour water on the diamond too! - Lara

Puzzle 14 - The Hanging Key
You will need to have solved Puzzle 3. Collect the following herbs for a potion: Cactus, Rose, Lotus. Make the potion and have villager (other than a nursing mom) drink it. That villager should feel "light and springy!". Drop them near the pink diamond (the hanging thing) just above the Rose plant - their status line should read "trying to reach the key". They will jump up, collect the key, and place it in the door. If they drop the key before reaching the door, you will have to resolve this puzzle. Note: You will also need a high Alchemy Level or your potion might blow up as mine did. - Lara

Puzzle 15 - The Clam Key
You will need to have solved Puzzle 9. Once the statue is completed, a pearl will appear where the statue used to be. Have a Master Builder pick up the pearl - he/she will take it to the waterfall to be "finished". Then have the tribal chief pick up the finished blue pearl: the chief will use the pearl to get the key from the giant clam and will then put the key in the door. (As with the other key puzzles, you may have to repeat parts of the puzzle if the key is dropped before it gets to the door).

Puzzle 16 - The Sun Dial
You will need to have solved Puzzles 13, 14, and 15. Once all three keys are in the door, the sun dial room will be revealed. Drop a villager on the sun dial until it reaches the position at the furthest left (there are three locations for the sun dial). When a beam of sunlight hits the sun dial, ghostly figures will appear in the room. Drop a villager on those ghosts and the mystery of the secret city will be revealed! Note: I had to do this a couple times before the game gave me credit for completing the puzzle... not sure why... but be prepared to do this action (and watch the movie) more than once. - Lara
